Google urges advertisers to keep human voices and faces in YouTube creative
The company’s Help Center says visible people and natural imagery can lift performance, and cites analysis showing a 12% conversion boost when a human voice is present.
Google has updated its Ads Help Center guidance for YouTube advertisers with a clear message: do not let AI wipe out the human element in video creative. The guidance says YouTube runs on human connection and encourages brands to feature faces or people actively engaging with the product wherever it fits the campaign.
The advice is tied to Demand Gen campaigns, which Google says can run across YouTube, including Shorts, as well as Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Google Display Network. Google says these campaigns can reach up to 3 billion monthly active users across its surfaces and use Google AI with flexible controls, alongside AI-powered bidding and measurement.
According to Google’s Demand Gen analysis, creative that includes a human voice produces a 12% lift in conversion rate. The company also says images with a visible human presence consistently outperform other assets.
The Help Center guidance goes beyond voices. It says advertisers should remove embedded buttons, non-functional arrows and clickable overlays, because baked-in interface elements compete with YouTube’s standard calls to action and can confuse viewers. Google also says to avoid oversized logos and solid, empty bars, and to blend images naturally with YouTube feeds.
For visuals, Google recommends full-bleed, high-resolution photography or lifestyle imagery, saying these formats immerse viewers in the content. It adds that when people demonstrate how a product works, users can more easily picture using it themselves, while polished product images, though useful, do not always capture attention on their own.
The page also leans on outside research to make its case. Google cites Nielsen as finding that creative accounts for 49% of campaign ROI, and Ekimetrics as finding that improving creatives can more than double ROI on YouTube. Separately, Google says conversion tracking should be set up on the website and the Google tag should be working properly, because the signals help systems reach the desired result faster.
