Khloé Kardashian defends AI opening after viewers question its use
The season eight sketch ended with the real family destroying their glitching digital doubles, but some fans said the show should not have used AI at all.
Khloé Kardashian defended an artificial-intelligence sequence in the season eight premiere of The Kardashians after viewers criticised the programme for using AI to deliver an anti-AI message. The opening presented digital versions of the Kardashian-Jenner family as if they had replaced the real cast, before ending with the family rejecting their stand-ins.
Kardashian posted the clip to Instagram on Oct. 8 with the instruction, “WATCH UNTIL THE END.” She wrote that it was frustrating, though typical, to see people comment after watching only its first few seconds rather than the full scene.
The sketch placed the AI family members in locations around the world before bringing them together in Calabasas. Kris Jenner appeared on a yacht in the South of France; Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker were in Japan; Khloé Kardashian was on safari; Kendall and Kylie Jenner attended a Versailles party; and Kim Kardashian was at a Swiss ski chalet.
As Vulture described, the apparent replacement then became a prank: after the digital group reunited in the Calabasas kitchen, its members began to glitch. Khloé’s eye bulged, Kylie grew a tail and Kourtney’s face became a red-nailed digit, while other distortions included Kim’s ear becoming a nose and Kris’ hands doubling in size.
The real family entered and confronted the AI versions. The fake Kris argued that an artificial family was easier to manage, with no scheduling conflicts or need for glam, and the ability to cry without spoiling makeup. Real Kris replied that the family could not be replaced, before Khloé pressed a kill switch that eliminated the digital characters. Kourtney concluded: “AI could never replace us.”
That ending did not persuade all viewers. Some objected that the family had still made an AI video, estimated by one commenter at two minutes, when the same point could have been made without the technology. Another asked how much freshwater had been used for the video. One viewer said they began and ended the clip confused.
Others were more positive. One fan wrote that the sequence initially seemed disappointing but became brilliant after its ending was understood. The dispute reflected wider concerns identified in coverage of the clip, including AI’s energy and water demands, misinformation and potential job replacement.
